The Presidential Trail offers different viewing angles of the 60-foot granite faces. While the distance is short, the stairs and high elevation make it a moderate workout for many visitors.

Is the trail to the base of the monument difficult?

The trail is moderately difficult due to its 422 stairs and the 5,725-foot elevation.

The full 0.6-mile loop requires physical exertion. You will climb and descend hundreds of stairs. The high elevation can also make breathing feel harder than usual. Wear sturdy walking shoes and carry a reusable water bottle.

Is the Presidential Trail wheelchair accessible?

Only the first section of the trail is wheelchair accessible.

The path starts flat and paved, passing the Lakota, Nakota and Dakota Heritage Village. After this accessible stretch, the trail transitions into staircases. Wheelchair users and those with strollers will need to turn back before the stairs begin.
